I had worked seven weeks for KLM, filling in forms with data about the stocks of airplane parts. I was entitled to one return ticket within Europe with 95% reduction, so I got a stand-by return to Athens. I did not sleep the night before departure, so I did not enjoy the flight very much. I looked down at the land and up at the sky, which appeared to be almost black. Only at the horizon the sky was regular blue. I saw the snowy mountains, but south of the Alps it was cloudy. I lay down on the empty seats and tried to sleep. In Athens I looked for transport to the station in town, but when I finally had entered a bus after asking "Thessaloniki?" the driver brought me to the other airport, for domestic flights. In the end I had to take a taxi. |

The small train to Yugoslavia was full of people who had been shopping in Greece. I was talking with some people from Bitola. They asked "What do you like more, Greece or Yugoslavia?" I answered "Yugoslavia", not only to please them, but because I liked their aggressive hospitality. It appeared to be very cold, just above zero. A man invited me to drink slibovica in his apartment. Cabinets and chairs were filled with toy puppets wearing girls' clothes. Afterwards he brought me to hotel "Makedonia", which I had found two years before, but was full. Now I could not find the reception. I looked upstairs, met a guy and found myself suddenly inside a room full of students from Libya, pointing proudly at the photo's of their president Khadaffi. The hotel had turned into students' dormitories. One of them brought me to the new hotel, opposite, in a brand-new 13-story building. It had just started snowing, but in spite of the cold the hole town was out for the daily parade, between seven and nine. That custom, the whole town walking out in one street, still existed all over Yugoslavia and other mediterranean countries. |

The train that brought us over the border consisted of a locomotive, a few empty freight cars and one car with compartments. There were about ten men and women, with or without uniform, on board, but we were the only passengers. They gave us a lot of attention. They checked our tickets and our passports. They asked us where we came from and where we were going. One of the women wanted to see what I had in my backpack. I opened it for her and she started slowly to take out things one by one. At once she ran screaming for help into the corridor. All the others came to see what had happened. She pointed from far away at my backpack and after some time somebody took out the rubber lizard, that we had found on a road outside Kastoría. The lizard did not keep the woman from checking the rest of the contents of my backpack, but she demanded that I too the items out. |

Our money was stolen from the nighttrain through Yugoslavia, so we had to hitch-hike the last part over the Italian border to Trieste. The Italian police refused us entry, because we had no money, but with our tickets home from Trieste we convinced them to let us go through. At the Trieste railway station we boarded a night train to Milano. Two man from Jordan entered our compartment, sat down and started to sigh deeply. They told us everything was stolen from them in Yugoslavia. They did want to reach Milano, however. One of them hid under the chairs, the other tried to sell his watch to the conductor. The conductor threw him out of the train at the first stop. The other guy stayed down, snored loudly and reached Milano next morning, shortly after five. |
