After we smoked hash I convinced my girlfriend to make a short trip across the border. We took a bus, which made a big detour through the countryside. At four we arrived at the desolated border station, Nieuweschans. We were glad that there still was somebody to sell us a ticket to Leer, just over the border. He said it was quite late for a one-day return. We entered one of the two aged empty wagons. As soon as we opened the door from the compartment heads raised from all sides to look at us. German and Dutch border policemen and train guards had been sleeping, each on their own seat. Shortly after this train was abolished and the ticket office was closed. |

We flew to Portugal on a free standby - ticket, but the return flight had no place for us. We took a night train to the Spanish border and from there we got a ride from a guy from Portugal who had to work next morning in Lyon. His mother had provided him with lots of fish and other food and he shared it with us. On our long way to France we had the unpleasent sight on different accidents. We approached the border only against midnight. The guy was dangerously tired after driving so long. I had to make great effort in order to convince him that the harbour of San Sebastian was not the border, although it had a checkpoint. After that he wanted to enter a highway from the wrong side. We managed however to reach Bordeaux safely at three o'clock in the morning. We waited for a train to Paris, but he had to drive still another 400 kilometers in order to reach his work that morning. |
