We took a train to the German border. From there we wanted to hitch-hike to Yugoslavia. We passed the checkpoints by foot and waited just after the German one for a ride. We had to wait for more than an hour. In that period we saw how an old German Volkswagen-minibus was taken into the garage by the police in order to be checked carefully for drugs. Two German boys, both with very long black hair, were hanging around. They looked very much like the average German drug tourist. When they were finally released by the German police they stopped for us and took us to Bremen. The car was littered with "chillums" (hash-pipes) and other evidence of their habit. Even the smell was still there, but of course they had removed every little piece of real stuff before crossing the border. We got a drink in their Bremen apartment before travelling further. I was astonished by the clean, office-like atmosphere of their room, so contradictory to their car. Such interiors seemed to be quite regular in Germany. |

We went home from Bosnia. We took a train from Bosanski Novi all the way to München. All seats were taken, but I asked around and most people, tourists who had spent holidays at the coast, would leave in Zagreb, so we were able to put our luggage in a compartment and reserve it. After Zagreb we were alone. The train however was littered with leftovers of food, papers and plastic and the toilets looked horrible. There was no water. We managed to sleep, however and we crossed the Austrian border almost without noticing it. After a night through Austria we passed Salzburg and entered Germany. At the German border station of Rosenheim a huge cleaning battalion entered the train. They removed all the litter, they cleaned the toilets and they put paper towels and soap. It was strange that they did it so shortly before arrival in München. It seemed to me that they did not want to remove just dirt, but foreign dirt. |
