The departure hall was overcrowded with Germans. The masses fought themselves slowly along the border control into the ship. After spending a horrible time in a noisy lounge we went to a booking office and ordered the cheapest bed we could get. It was a six-berth cabin with no door. A very old German couple occupied the lower berths, Vronie and I climbed the upper ones. One berth was still vacant. The heat, the smell of sweat and the noise from all the open cabins around made sleeping impossible. In the middle of the night a young German entered the cabin and started to shout at the old man that he had taken his bed. The guy was drunk and went on and on shouting. The old man hardly replied. I decided to stop the show and shouted back at the drunk guy in my worst and ugliest German, that he should stop shouting or else go to hell. He looked confused for a moment and disappeared. We never saw him back. We arrived in England with two hours delay. Shortly after we returned to Holland I got a phone-call from my mother. She just wanted to make sure I was still alive. She had heard on the news about the delay of our ferry: a man had fallen off the ship, presumably a young German. A search of two hours was in vain. |

Near the border I found a compartment with two girls. I thought they were Japanese, but they said they were from Greenland. They travelled from Amsterdam to Copenhagen to catch their plane back home. I dropped the word "eskimo", but they said "no" with a deep sigh, shaking their heads. They were very insulted. |

With my brother from Delft we made a tour through the countryside around Groningen. We decided to compare the flatness of the land to the German countryside, just over the border. The heavily armed German customs however directed us with our car into a garage. Two apprentices searched me and my brother, but there was no female to search my girlfriend. They searched the car also from top to bottom. Only one hour later we were able to continue our sunday afternoon trip. |

Only in 1998 I added this border crossing to my archive. I have forgotten when exactly we took the bus to Ter Apel and crossed the German border by foot, but most probably it was between 1976 en 1980. We walked a few kilometers through Germany until we saw Dutch houses at the other side of a potato field. We crossed the border illegally and walked further until we reached a road with a bus stop, where we waited. |
