In Cologne I visited museums and galleries. In the gallery of Rudolf Zwirner I was very impressed by Arnulf Rainer's Death Masks. I had not heard of him before. I bought a catalogue. Thereafter I found a book shop full of tempting art books on sale. For less than a quarter of the original price a I bought a huge book with drawings of Tapies. This initiated my habit of looking for sales and it made it possible to build quite a valuable art library. The books were wrapped in brown paper. In the train I put the big parcel on the seat next to me. After entering Holland two young blacks from the former colonies entered my compartment. They played with drugs. One lifted his shirt and the other caressed or scratched his back. They looked at my impressive brown package and one asked the other in his foreign dialect what could be in the white man's brown parcel. |

I decided to visit a Dutch friend in Cork just after the school of the art academy had finished. However, mail and telephone workers were on strike and already for months contact with Ireland had been impossible. I took a boat to England, spent a sunday morning in Hyde Park and took a train to Swansea in Wales, were a boat should sail to Cork. I walked along deserted factories to the harbour. I shared a compartment with an Englishman deep down in the belly of the ship. I was softly shaken into an excellent sleep, not by the waves but by the ship's moving engines. The noise made it impossible to hear the knocking of a third passenger, who had to go to the steward to have the door, locked by us from the inside. opened. Next morning I followed the description to the house of our friend and found her outside with her youngest daughter. We kissed and I told her I had an excellent trip, sleeping well both nights. |
