On our way to the Biennale in Venezia we got a ride from a German guy whose destination in the south of his country I forgot. Together with him we spend the night outside, in a field near a small river, although it was too cold to sleep outside. Early next morning, a sunday, we drove further through a dense morning mist. It was difficult to keep my eyes open, seeing nothing but white haze. At once a dead body, hanging from a pole, loomed up. I was shocked for a moment until, after it had disappeared in the white mist, I realized it was one of those life-size crucifixes, that the catholics in Bavaria used to put at crossroads. Our driver reminded us that that day there would be elections and that the catholic priests would summon their flock to vote for the ultra-conservative Franz-Joseph Strauss. Our driver suggested that he would go into a church and would make uproar after the priest had made his summons. I liked his idea, but I thought it would be of no effect and, very selfish, it would delay our trip to the Biennale. I convinced him not to go to the church, but he seemed agitated. He wanted to bring us all the way to the mountain-pass, the border with Austria, but he drove like mad, with squeaking brakes, along the deep abysses off the curving road. |

Hitch-hiking back home from the Biennale we left a car in the middle of the highway, not far from Heidelberg. When we had just reached a petrol station with resting place, from where it would be easy to get a ride, a Swiss car stopped. The driver appeared to be Dutch and he wanted to take us all the way to Holland. He said he had rented the car in Geneva, where he was at an international conference, to go as quickly as possible to a family occasion home. We had a very pleasant quick ride. The Dutch customs, however, told him that he was not allowed to drive a car in Holland with a foreign license plate. However he could make a special request. He had to come to the office, fill in all kind of forms and questionnaires and pay the taxes he would have paid driving a Dutch car. It took more than an hour before he was allowed to drive further. He had to hurry not to come too late. He put us off the car in Nijmegen, but he had no time to pass by the railway station, he said. We told him he for sure should not make a detour for us, wished him good luck and walked the short way to the station. |
