I made a bicycle tour from Groningen in the north to Maastricht in de south of Holland. I followed more or less the eastern border with Germany. After six hours riding I crossed the border. The bored customs wanted to see everything I had in my bag en they even opened my hot water bottle. I suppose they looked for drugs. One of them asked "Why are you alone?" It appeared that somebody who is alone is in general more suspected than people travelling with somebody else.

Cycling from Groningen to Maastricht I crossed one more time the border into Germany. My map showed scenic roads through forests. They led however into a huge British army base. Germany was officially still an occupied country and this was the British sector. There were houses and I saw women and children. Nobody asked me what I did there. I could have surveyed the base further, but I decided to go back and find another way.

We looked at the Berlin wall from the train to Friedrichstrasse. Some of the platforms of that station were mentioned for western traffic, most were for eastern. Soldiers everywhere, down and above, made it impossible to cross illegally. We had to go down for the border check. After arriving in East Berlin I was struck by the difference in price for an S-Bahn (urban railway) ticket between east and west: for the price of one ride in the west one could go more than ten times in the east.

We had a reservation for a car for foreigners, but we decided to mix with the local population at the other side of the train. We met an East German who studied in Bratislava to be a dentist. He went with his girlfriend on vacation to the Slovakian mountains. Bratislava is very close to Vienna and his dream was to go there once. Citizens from behind the iron curtain, however, were not allowed to go to the west. We left the train in Decín, just over the Czech border. We found a hotel and after the receptionist had done some bureaucratic procedures with our passports he said, with an artificial voice: "Willkommen in der Tschechoslowakei! (Welcome in Czechoslovakia!)"

After three days in Czechoslovakia, where stalinist oppression was palpable everywhere in the air, we entered Hungary. The Hungarian border policemen asked us for cigarettes. In Salgótarján, the first town over the border, we found plenty of food and drink. The buildings in the centre were standing as if they were happy. We found a pleasant and cheap holiday room in a wooden barrack on a camping. The swimming pool, however, was empty because of the long drought.

The change from Hungary to Romania was quite shocking. From a western country, although behind the iron curtain, we came into a sovietized Balkan. The people looked extremely poor and in Arad we had problems finding anything to eat. We tried to get a ticket at the station for further travelling, but we were directed to an office in town. There we only found masses of apathetically waiting people and nobody to explain us what was going on. Another office appeared to the same. We went back to the station and decided to travel out of town to a small place, Radna, where it might be easier to get information. Three men in our compartment told us in French that the had seen a film in town. They joked carefully about their president, Ceaucescu, whom they had to call "notre père" (our father). They said they would have taken us to their homes, but "notre père" did not allow it. So we landed in a modern though already decayed hotel. There was a small market and the people there spoke a German dialect. We managed to get a place on the train next morning to Bucharest. All eight people on the platform had place in the same compartment. They all started to fight who should sit where, while we were looking astonishedly. After the fight was over the whole compartment had a pleasant talk.

We decided not to wait in Bucharest for the train to Sofia, but in Giurgiu at the Danube river, the border with Bulgaria. We went there through the dark in a local train without light. The train guard was totally drunk and the passengers were laughing. After two hours waiting in Giurgiu without seeing any other passengers we boarded the train to the Bulgarian capital. We found a compartment for ourselves. The border control by the Romanians passed without problems, but seconds before departure the policemen started to shout at us that we should get off the train immediately. Not understanding I asked what was wrong, but they only shouted louder and we thought already about leaving when another policeman intervened. He told them that we had boarded in Giurgiu and not in Bucharest. Apparently they had counted the passengers in Bucharest and again in Giurgiu and we had been the difference, which had to be taken out of the train. Soon after we crossed the Danube towards the Bulgarian border control.

The station of the tourist resort Sandanski, where we waited for our train to Greece, was packed with people. Their kind of clothes and backpacks made clear all of them came from behind the iron curtain: East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary. I wondered how they would be able to cross the border, until a train came to the other direction. This was really the furthest they could go. They all left northbound and no other passenger boarded our train. Soon we crossed the iron curtain, but there it appeared to be a little bit more friendly than in Germany: no huge concrete walls, but just an iron fence.

After I had sprained my ankle twice in Greece I stumbled on my girlfriend's arm to a hotel in the Yugoslav border town of Gevgelija. I felt much more at home there than in Greece, because I spoke some Serbocroatic. We found the cheapest place, dirty and decayed. We got room number 1, next to the dirty receptionist's corner. When I came back to the room after a shower, Vronie pointed at one of the little holes in the wall. I saw some light. She said she had seen an eye moving behind it, after she had started to undress.

We booked sleeping accommodation for the train from Belgrade to Venice. We got a cabin with six berths. No other people entered. Before departure I heard an unpleasant female voice talking and nagging in American English. The pretty young girl who was hanging around the neck of a tall oriental guy, kissing and hugging him, did not fit the voice. He seemed quite indifferent. After departure she joined us, to our disappointment. She said the guy was a refugee from Lebanon and she had met him shortly before. I suggested to tie the door with any ropes or wires we had, to prevent theft. So we did. Only my girlfriend did not sleep, because she had seen a fat dirty man from the adjoining compartment trying to look inside. In the morning I left the train at the Yugoslav border station to buy a ticket for the rest of the trip: In Belgrad I had bought tickets to the last Yugoslav station only, because international tickets were at least four times more expensive. The girls were still in bed when I came back. After we had entered Italy, two young Italian border policemen came to our compartment. They pointed at the bags of both girls, saying they wanted to inspect them. Both girls jumped obediently out of their beds and that seemed to be exactly what they wanted to inspect: girls in underpants.

We had to change many times on our long trip from Greece back home. Early in the morning we reached the border between Luxembourg and Belgium, where we had to change for a small train to the first Belgian station, where we could take a train further to the north. One of the people waiting was an Israeli who had arrived that night from Israel in Strasbourg and was on his way to visit a girlfriend in Holland. We travelled together. He boasted about the trips he had made in Eastern Europe, although there were no official relations between Israel and the communist countries. He said that there were different ways to go there. That he worked for the Mossad is probably an addition of my own memory.
