After my arrival at the German border station Leer I shook hands with the platform chief. He knew that I would arrive too late for the last train to Groningen in Holland, because I had been stuck in Kassel in a train with a broken locomotive. A cab was waiting for me, which, of course, would be paid by the German railways. After filling in of a lot of papers he guided me to the taxi. Th driver managed to reach Nieuweschans, the Dutch border station, just a few seconds before departure of the local train to Groningen and he hooted in order to make it wait. My delay was almost two hours, but the policy of the railways had worked: if anything goes wrong, treat your client as a king and they will come back even more often. |

I wanted to visit the new museum in Dunkerque, but the main attraction of that town was its location close to the Belgian border and the fact that once it had been Flemish, like Valenciennes and Lille. There was apparently no public transport across the border, so I rented a bike at the most nearby Belgian station and cycled the last kilometers to France. Shortly after the border started postmodern apartment blocks, thereafter the buildings became older and older until I reached the narrow streets of the old city. I ended at the new Museum for Modern Art. |

After a ride through the beautiful desolate mountains of Northern Greece we arrived at Idoméni, the Greek border town. We looked down an saw Gevgelija in Yugoslavia. We asked how to get there, but nobody understood what we wanted. Only an officer at the small police station could tell us: We had to go back 20 kilometers, cross the river and take the main road on the other side. Together with the masses that travelled from Turkey to Germany after their holiday home we crossed the border. Looking for a place right of the road we ended up at a heavily guarded power station, so we went left and entered a village. As it was the evening walking our landrover was soon surrounded by many curious guys, who were happy to guide us to a field where they used to play football. One guy brought us melon, grapes and apples. When we asked about the clarinet music we heard he told us that there was a wedding: a girl from the village with a boy from the Macedonian capital Skopje. He took us there and very impressed I looked at the gipsy musicians and listened to them. On a haystack a young man played an Indian tabla and his singing also reminded me of Indian music. Another man played the keyboard and there were more players, bus most impressing was a somewhat older clarinet player with a huge stomach. It was impossible not to dance on his music, which sounded much like what we had heard in northern Greece. Every time he threatened to stop playing somebody put banknotes in his pockets an than he went on. Without any break they played and they played and when we went to sleep at one in the night they were still playing. It was after three that I feel asleep with their music in my ears. If I ever get married, I thought, I only want this band to play. |

On my way to Antwerp I talked with a woman from Colombia. She complained about those people who identify "Americans" with citizens of the United States. The rest of our talk was quite pleasant. I told her about my project: destroying one thousand drawings and showing them in glass jars. The day before I had just destroyed the first two drawings.
