After two nights of travel we arrived at 8 a.m. in Paris. Our train two Holland was still empty, as it would leave only in two hours. I found that all places in all cars were reserved, due to the affluent eastern-traffic. The luggage-wagon however had a few free extra compartments, so we installed there. At about 9.30 a mother came with three children. They lived on a cargo ship, sailing mainly through France. The children's holidays had ended and they had to go back to their boarding school in Holland. The mother said she had a salon in her ship with sofa, television and flowers. She said she always had to sit with her arms crossed in her boarding school (her parents also had a ship). I remembered I also had to sit with my arms crossed, and when I wanted attention from the teacher I lifted them, very stiffly crossed, as high as possible, together was the other children. |

In Strasbourg I took a train, which would bring me across three borders to Maastricht. A guy entered and started to read a Yugoslavian newspaper. After he put his newspaper away I tried out the few words in Serbocroatic on him. He was Croat, he worked in Germany and his parents lived in Metz in France. I told him I never had noticed any difference between the Serbs and the Croats, except that the Serbs write cyrillic and are orthodox and the Croats write latin and are roman catholics. He said the differences were very big and he wanted the Croats and the Serbs to split. |

I travelled to Paris for the opening of the Lissitzky-exhibition. I had written two stories for the catalogue. I entered the train to Paris in Rotterdam and after walking from one end in the train to the other I found an empty compartment. Five of the seats were reserved from Rotterdam, but nobody else entered. The hope that my five hours in that compartment would be quiet was smashed when, at the border station Roosendaal, the company did show up: five schoolboys entered my no-smoking compartment, holding damping cigars and a huge stereo installation, making their first trip abroad without their parents. I was almost shocked when, even before I started coughing, they read the sign "no smoking" and extinguished their cigars, although they had booked a smoking compartment. I only heard the horrible noise of the radio when I came back from the toilet; shortly after I sat down it was turned off. When I left the air conditioned train in Paris, it was like I entered the tropical hothouse for reptiles in the zoo. I had not expected such a humid heat and I had to take off most the clothes I had needed in Holland. |

Czechoslovakia had become a pleasant holiday country, since the communist regime had fallen. We had spent a week in a cottage there, not far from the German border. The river had swollen dangerously because of the heavy rains. The camping was left; some tents were still standing in the water. Making a telephone call was impossible, because the wires through the forest touched the wet trees. Also if our week wasn't finished, we would have to leave. At eight in the morning our neighbour took us in his car and drove us the 28 kilometers to the border. He told us we probably had to make detours, because bridges had broken. We drove through forested mountains, until recently a closed military area. On many places the road was hardly passable because of the stones and the silt that the rains had left. Here and there were still rivers flowing over the road. At a certain point a militiaman with a gruff face told us, and other cars, to go back an take another route. "Stara struktura", murmured our neighbour; "as from the former government" I thought he meant. With some more detours we reached the border. Our neighbour turned and went back, while we crossed by foot, passing the waiting cars and saying "Holland" to the police. They did not even want to see our passports. |

At the Dutch border station Hengelo I was waiting for the train to Moscow, with seven heavy bags around me. A man came to me with a huge parcel, wrapped in blue plastic, that could contain nothing but a bomb. He said it was a racing-car with remote control. He asked me to take it to Moscow, where a friend would wait at the platform in order to receive it. There was no other way to get it there. He had asked two girls the evening before, but they had refused. He talked too easy, but I trusted him because he reminded me of the guy who asked me 18« years before in a Copenhagen streetcar, with a very British accent "Are you a fellow tram enthusiast?" He helped me loading all the bags and his box in the Russian train. When I entered my compartment I regretted my decision, because the British man in the lower bed, travelling to his Russian wife with seventeen bags and suitcases, had left no room for my things. Every now and then during the 39 hours trip I feared that the parcel would explode, would contain drugs or a remote control for a rocket, but in fact I was quite sure that it really was a racing-car. Shortly before the border with what had been the Soviet Union until two days before, I opened the parcel, but as it was dark I could not identify the parts. After arriving in Moscow a tall Russian man with a huge fur hat entered our compartment and asked whether I was Henk. He said he was from the model club, asked for the blue parcel, gave me a bottle of vodka and disappeared before we could exchange addresses. |

I travelled with Volodja and Ilona to Kiev, where his sister lived. I wondered if there would be no check at the new border, but they said not to worry, although my visum was not valid for trips so far out of Moscow. They got me a ticket for Russians, which cost about 25 dollarcent, as the rouble had been inflated terribly. A soldier entered our four-person compartment. His comrade joined him, because they wanted to drink. They had spent two years in the Ural mountains without any leave and now they went home. I did not want to drink, but that was against all rules, so I took one glass of vodka and emptied it in one time, as the Russians used to do. Happily both soldiers were totally drunk within minutes. The one who was still able to stand put the other in the upper bed and left for his own compartment. |
