During my stay in a studio in the very south of Holland I cycled now and then over the Belgian border. This time I went all the way to Germany, 30 kilometers partly over the former international railway, drove through the outskirts of Aachen and looked from there for the way to Belgium. I climbed a mountain and on top of it I saw three poles. That was the point were Holland, Germany and Belgium meet. I walked around them, crossing one border after the other, but I do not recognize them as separate crossings, as I don't with my earlier visit there, 27 years before. I continued my way into Belgium, riding just south of the Dutch border. |

The Dutch train guard entered already in Leer in Germany, as usual. He spoke German to me, because I showed my ticket for the German part of the trip and I had bought it in Germany. He did not ask for the Dutch part, so I could use that ticket another time. |

We were almost alone in the wagon when the night train left Leipzig for Kraków. After we had passed Görlitz and had crossed the river Neisse, the border since 1945, it started to freeze severely. The train stopped at many small stations. I could only vaguely see people, because the platforms were hardly lit and covered with mists from frost, but very many people entered. Around midnight a round grandmother entered our compartment and put two little girls to sleep. I sat until Wroclav, where she found a compartment for themselves, as many people had left the train. The last hours we slept very well and when we woke up the train was already on its way out of the station of Kraków to the depot. |

Standing in a line for an interrogation was a new experience for me. A somewhat strange man from Maastricht told me he went to visit a girlfriend. My interrogation by the Israelis took an hour. I was quite shocked when the security man wanted to call Hadassa in Jerusalem, as I had always lived in a peaceful country. The man from Maastricht said that they also wanted to call his girlfriend, but that his visit should have been a surprise. After being interrogated by another guard and after half an hour more waiting the man came back and gave me regards from Hadassa. The flight itself was nothing more than sitting a whole night in a crowded waiting room, as I had no window next to me. In Israel everybody seemed to be very nervous. The taxi drivers shouted and pushed me and my luggage from one car to the other. I ended in an empty minibus with an orthodox jew who shouted at the driver that he did not want to wait. he managed to convince him and so I sat alone at the back seat, looking at the hills under the rising sun. The driver apparently noticed that I was not accustomed to Israeli habits. He let me off at the wrong side of the road. I gave him 30 shekkel and he begged me if he could keep the change. It was 7.40 a.m. Hadassa was waiting for me upstairs. |
