The airport taxi arrived earlier than promised. I took my things, added some food and went down. I was the first passenger and took the front seat. We drove to the next one, but he was not there. He was shopping, he said through his mobile phone. When he arrived twenty minutes later, he said through the right window he still had to pack his suitcase. During ten minutes I suffered their shouting, the passenger from the right and the driver from the left. As a Dutchman I kept being polite, like the Dutch Members of Parliament who were unexpectedly searched by the Israeli security guards who accompanied Netanyahu during his visit to The Hague, but inside I almost killed both, and I think that's not far from what the polite Dutch politicians did in their minds with Netanyahu and his security guards. Leaving the man time to pack his bag we went to Meah Shearim. A group of ultra-orthodox jews, dressed in black, was waiting with a high pile of suitcases and bags. They said they had to take more from above. This time the shouting went from the back to the front and vice versa. I thought about leaving and taking a bus, but I would not have been able to get my bag from down the ultra-orthodox pile. The shouting ended with the driver's remark that their kind of people always made problems. One hour had passed when we finally headed for the airport. Only one time we almost hit an oncoming car.

My flight was delayed, because the plane was stuck in Banjul, the capital of Gambia in West Africa, and the small charter company had no other plane. Seven in the morning had already become two in the afternoon, but the information and the tv said it would be 6.30. The check-in gave no additional information. I knew that Hadassa's mother was due to come back from the States with KLM and when I saw that her plane would depart only shortly after my charter I asked at an information desk to call her through the loudspeakers. Two minutes later she arrived with a worried face, asking herself what had gone wrong. In the end she arrived half an hour earlier in Israel. Alma and Hadassa were waiting for both of us. Only after three at night we came home.

From two at night I waited for the check-in. A boy in his late teens asked in Dutch with an accent if this was the right place for the flight to Israel. He said he lived in Haifa, his mother was Dutch and his father Arab. He said he had to wait for an Israeli security guard, who would check him especially, because he was Arab. I adopted him more or less, asked him to reserve a place next to me, so I would feel less claustrophobic, and waited for the Israeli security guard to see what would happen. I was not interrogated at all. In the end he appeared to be wrong. The Israeli was a travel agent, who came to bring him a new ticket, because his name was spelled wrong.

I flew with Alma to Holland. She was three years now and it would be nice to attend the feast of Sinterklaas, when people give each other presents with rhymes. As it was late at night Alma got tired. A Dutch-Israeli woman before us put her chair as far as possible to the bag, so that Alma could hardly move. Being tired, she moved as much as possible and of course touched the chair of the woman before her, who complained and complained and pitied herself that she had got such a bad place. She made me extremely nervous and in the end I started to hit her chair myself. Only shortly before landing Alma fell asleep, totally exhausted.

In Brussel we went to the departure hall for the train to London, through the tunnel. Everything was done to add the unpleasant phenomenons of flying to the train travel: queuing for the check in, waiting in a characterless hall, the entering with hundreds of other passengers at the same time and the pushing in the corridor to find the reserved chair. The landscape seemed to have been as boring a possible, especially for the new rail track. The border between Belgium and France was invisible and the border between France and England was a dark tunnel. I felt very sad about the new Europe.

After the boring but crowded trip from London to Brussels we were happy that we had not booked for the quick similar train to Holland. We took the slower one, which had large compartments instead of narrow airplane-seats. Alma could make noise and jump without disturbing anybody, so we could sit relaxed. Near the station of Brussels North I pointed at the red lighted windows, displaying women. Alma said "You know, there is my work!"
